Satellites show where forests are being lost - how AI is helping

WASHINGTON — One-third (34%) of all global forest lost between 2001 and 2024 is likely permanent — meaning trees in those areas are unlikely to grow back naturally, according to a new analysis by World Resources Institute (WRI) and Google DeepMind. The findings, made possible by an advanced AI model and satellite imagery and developed by Global Forest Watch, Land & Carbon Lab and Google DeepMind, offer the most detailed local, regional and global view to date of what’s driving forest loss — and what can be done about it.

RH reports 'surprise' profit

CORTE MADERA, Calif. — In reporting first-quarter 2025 results, numbers that were referred to as a "surprise" by at least one analyst, Gary Friedman, chairman and Chief Executive Officer of RH, reported a profit for the fiscal 2025 first quarter and said the company was making progress moving production out of China to mitigate tariff impacts.

Veneer company closing factory

JACKSON CENTER, Pa. — International Timber and Veneer, a manufacturer of custom-cut veneer products, is set to close its facility by August 18, 2025.According to a WARN notice filed with the state, the closure of the plant in Jackson Center, Mercer County, will affect 81 workers.

Industry to testify on OSHA's heat illness plan

The Department of Labor has released a proposed rule with the goal of "protecting millions of workers from the significant health risks of extreme heat."On June 16, the agency will begin a five-day informal rulemaking hearing that will elicit testimony from labor groups, and a variety of industry groups. On June 18, Betsy Natz, CEO of the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association, will provide detailed information on how the heat plan will affect the organization's members.
