VWMA Names Collins Woodworker of the Year

RYEGATE, VT - Custom furniture manufacturer Janet Collins was named Woodworker of the Year by the Vermont Wood Manufacturers Assn. Collins, who has been honing her craft for about 20 years, specializes in traditional furniture. Pieces are built by hand, one at a time, using traditional methods of joinery, turning, carving and inlay.

Stanley Q1 Sales Decline 10%

STANLEYTOWN, VA – Stanley Furniture reported first-quarter sales of $75.1 million, a decline of 10.1% compared to the first quarter of last year. Net income dipped from $5.4 million to $1.7 million. The company attributed to the decline to an industry-wide sales slump. Read more.

HNI Corp. CEO makes $2.6 million in 2006

MUSCATINE, IA – According to WQAD, a regulatory statement filed said HNI Corp. paid Stan Askren, its chairman, president and CEO, $2.6 million in 2006. Reportedly, Askren’s compensation included a salary of $704,250, $616,032 in non-equity incentive plan compensation, $10,538 as his share of the company’s profit sharing plan and $239,098 in other compensation.

Masonite to Close Plant, Lay Off 70

TAMPA, FL -- Masonite Int’l Corp., a global door manufacturer, plans to close its plant in Frederick County, MD, in July, with 70 layoffs slated for May 16, according to the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

Researchers Look to Turn Cow Pies into Furniture Panels

DETROIT – Researchers at Michigan State University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are working on a process to turn sterilized cow manure into fiberboard for use in furniture, shelving, flooring and more. According to the Associated Press, the fiberboard is made by mixing sterilized manure with chemical resins and subjecting the mixture to heat and pressure.
