Northwest Hardwoods names Jeppson CEO and chairman

TACOMA, Wash. -- Northwest Hardwoods Inc. has named Nathan Jeppson as chief executive officer and chairman effective January 7, 2019, and will report directly to the Board of Directors of NWH. TJ Rosengarth will remain on the board of NWH to ensure a smooth transition for the business.

Yoder Lumber’s Mel Yoder to retire

Yoder Lumber Co., a major manufacturer of Appalachian Hardwoods, has announced the following management changes: Melvin Yoder has announced that he will retire as the chief executive officer effective Dec. 31, 2016.

Softwood and hardwood pulpwood prices reach lowest levels in 10 years

SEATTLE, Wash. -  Wood cost is the factor that often determines the competitiveness of a pulp manufacturing plant or region, because it is the largest cost component when producing wood pulp. During the past few years, this cost has varied between 45% and 70% of the total cash cost, depending on product grade and the costs of other components such as chemicals, energy and labor.

Is it red oak or white oak?

Since I started milling lumber, determining the difference between red oak and white oak has been a challenge. I’ve got a good handle on it now, but there are plenty of times (at least once a week) when a customer has a piece of wood that they want to identify. It is usually some old barn lumber and usually some sort of oak.
