Wendy Scott, Boutique Closets and Cabinetry, and JDW Designs created a flex space that houses the family's laundry room, locker space, and broom closet. The project won the Specialty category in the 2023 Top Shelf Design Awards. Winners were announced on April 13 at a reception sponsored by CCF Industries during the Closets Conference & Expo, held in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Here’s how Scott describes the project:

Project Title: The Heart of The Home

Project Details: Not only is it the heart of the home, but it also houses their heart. Cliffy's room was built into the cabinetry, complete with a feeding center. The flex space also houses the family's laundry room, locker space, and broom closet. Located in a high-traffic space, this multi-functional space had to have function and style.

Projection Construction: To have mesh on two sides, the side panel was routed out, and a second mesh door was applied as an end panel. The mesh door is held on with heavy-duty magnets. In front of the sink is a false panel to hide the pipes. Over the washer and dryer, a piece of trim was added to hide the gaps. This molding is also held on by magnets in the event the units need to slide out for repairs or maintenance. The broom closet also houses a large panel for accessing the water and gas shut-offs. Each locker contains an oversized drawer for shoes and hooks.

Materials Used: Tafisa Chameleon, Wire Mesh, Magnets, JB Cutting molding

Equipment Used: KCD and Closet Pro
