UPDATE: Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. acquires the owner of Cabinets To Go, Lumber Liquidators and more.

MURRAY, Utah – Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. (NYSE: BBBY) announced the acquisition of The Container Store, a specialty retailer of storage and organization solutions. The move comes as The Container Store recently transitioned through a period of bankruptcy restructuring and private ownership, emerging as a strategic asset that fits directly into Bed Bath & Beyond’s expansion into home services.

In Bed, Bath & Beyond CEO Marcus Lemonis’s January 5, 2026, letter to shareholders, he outlined his vision to transform the company into a comprehensive ecosystem for homeowners under an Everything Home framework.

That framework consists of three pillars: Pillar One – omni-channel retail brands (Bed, Bath & Beyond, Overstock, buybuy BABY and Kirkland; Pillar Two - protection, advocacy and financing solutions including property and casualty insurance, renters’ insurance, home warranties, product warranties, mortgages, HELOCs, renovation loans and title services; and Pillar Three – home services and installable products.

The recent acquisition of The Container Store (and Closet Works) fits into Pillar Three of Bed, Bath & Beyond’s Everything Home framework.

"“We are building the first Everything Home Company designed to make home ownership and living simpler and more affordable through a disciplined, interconnected ecosystem,” he said... Pillar Three will focus on home services and installable products including flooring, cabinetry, closet and storage systems, and renovation and installation offerings."

By integrating The Container Store, the company gains an immediate national footprint of premium locations and a robust infrastructure for high-margin, service-oriented retail.

Unlocking the potential of Elfa and Custom Spaces

Another key component of the deal is the global scaling of Elfa, the Swedish-founded modular storage brand. Historically, Elfa’s growth in the U.S. was restricted by a concentrated distribution model, Lemonis noted. Under Bed, Bath & Beyond, Elfa is being positioned as a "global growth platform."

"We see Elfa as one of the most important growth engines to be included within our Home Services platform," said Lemonis. "…we believe we will have the opportunity to grow this brand well beyond its historical constraints and fully realize its global potential."

The Custom Spaces branding launched in 2022 focuses on whole-home organization.

The acquisition also leverages significant investments made by The Container Store prior to its restructuring:

  • Closet Works Integration: The Container Store’s 2021 acquisition of Chicago-based Closet Works for $21.5 million provided the wood-based manufacturing capabilities necessary for high-end, bespoke storage.
  • Custom Spaces Branding: In 2022, The Container Store debuted "Custom Spaces," a rebranding effort that shifted focus from closets to whole-home organization, including living areas and garages.

These assets allow Bed Bath & Beyond to offer a complete solution, with a wide range of products from entry-level to premium, full-service installations.

The transaction is expected to add approximately $500 million in incremental annualized revenue to Bed Bath & Beyond’s retail base with plans to expand Elfa through new channels, including direct-to-consumer (DTC) models and self-serve retail formats, while utilizing The Container Store’s existing showrooms to anchor its growing home services and installation business.

Lemonis told shareholders 2025 was about stabilizing and building its base and 2026 is about defining the company’s future and growing. "These transactions are not just about adding brands, they are about unlocking growth."
