Two-dimensional laminates (2DL), three-dimensional laminates (3DL), and films are versatile decorative surfaces specified for commercial and residential interiors. Valued for their design flexibility, performance, and durability, they are used for making cabinets, drawer fronts, furniture, and component parts.
2DL and 3DL are made by applying thermoplastic films over MDF or particleboard substrates, transforming them into sleek panels or fully wrapped, contoured components.
2D Laminates (2DL)
2DL is a flexible film used for flat lamination and profile wrapping, making it ideal for edgebanding, crown moulding, and flat surfaces. It is mainly made from vinyl, using enough plasticizer to render the material flexible.
In addition to vinyl, 2DL includes polyester-saturated paper, polyester films (PET), light basis weight paper, decorative foils, and polypropylene films, all offering excellent flexibility and strength. Film-based 2DL provides superior resistance to water, chemicals, and scratches, with options for embossed woodgrain or unique textures, while paper-based 2DL varies in durability and finish.
Common uses for 2DL include RV walls and ceilings, retail store fixtures, cabinets, commercial flooring, and residential components.
3D Laminates (3DL)
3DL, also known as rigid thermoformable foils (RTF), is membrane pressed and allows end users to design components with contoured surfaces and seamless edges without requiring edge treatments. Made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG), these thermoplastics soften when heated and retain their shape upon cooling.
Enhanced with coatings for improved scuff and chemical resistance, 3DL is available in a wide range of gloss levels, including soft-touch and fingerprint-resistant finishes. It delivers realistic woodgrain, stone, and abstract patterns, with Embossed-in-Register (EIR) technology to align texture precisely, making it a perfect complement to TFL.
Highly resistant to impact, chipping, and cracking, 3DL is well suited for retail fixtures, RV tables, and countertops. In addition, the continuously contoured formed component seals the substrate from moisture and bacteria, making it a preferred choice in healthcare settings. When used with routed MDF, 3DL can be formed to nearly any shape, from logos and letters to raised panel and Shaker-style doors.
2D & 3D Laminates: Beauty around every edge
Two-dimensional laminates (2DL), three-dimensional laminates (3DL), and films offer more than just decorative finishes; they open a world of design possibilities. These surfaces combine aesthetics, durability, and functionality in a seamless way to create commercial and residential spaces that are visually stunning and built to last.

Decorative surface films
Decorative surface films — including polypropylene, polyester, and acrylic — offer water resistance, durability, and eco-conscious benefits.
Polypropylene Films: Calendered polypropylene films, or “Cast Polypropylene,” are available in solid colors and can be printed, making them ideal for flat laminations and edgebanding in garages and kitchen cabinets. Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) and Oriented Polypropylene (OPP) provide enhanced dimensional stability and high-fidelity in woodgrain prints. Coated for scuff, scratch, and stain resistance, these films are widely used in RTA furniture, cabinets, wrapped profiles, and wall panels.
Polyester Films: Available in PET for flat lamination and PETG for embossing, they offer excellent print fidelity and are typically coated for scratch and stain resistance. They are ideal for 5-piece doors, healthcare, and residential furniture.
Acrylic Films: Highly durable and UV-resistant, they are formulated for thermoforming or flat lamination. The films are resistant to chemicals and abrasion, easy to clean, and available in printed or solid high-gloss finishes. Applications include cabinet doors, tub surrounds, and retail displays.
Case study: 2DL & 3DL elevate design options
Northern Contours, a manufacturer of residential and commercial cabinetry, closet, and furniture components, prefers 2D and 3D laminates for their high-end aesthetics, lifelike textures, and robust durability.
While 3DL is a staple of the Minnesota-based company, it has also seen a spike in market demand for 2DL.
“What’s exciting about 2DL is how far it’s come,” Missy Sjerven, vice president of Marketing, noted in a previous interview. “The tactile realism is unbelievable — textures, woodgrain ticking, the depth of color. Combine that with EIR (embossed in register) technology and you get materials that look and feel remarkably like real wood, but with performance that blows traditional finishes out of the water.”
She added, “Designers often prefer the look of ‘true grain orientation’ in five-piece doors. With 2DL stiles and rails, we’re able to deliver that classic Shaker style with a warmth and authenticity that today’s consumers love.”
The machinability of 3DL and 2DL products is another advantage. “We’re doing a lot of miter folding now,” Sjerven said. “Our 2DL drawer boxes fold up in seconds with no visible seams. They ship flat, so we’re not wasting space or energy in transit, and install in less than a minute. It’s a perfect example of how efficiency can drive sustainability.”
Northern Contours also promotes the products’ sustainability story. “Designers want materials that are beautiful, durable, and cost-effective — but also smart and sustainable,” she said.
