For building a walnut kitchen cabinet suite, cabinetmakers' pricing ranged from a low of $8,600 all the way up to more than $37,000. For a frameless maple kitchen, estimates ranged from $10,000 to over $35,000. FDMC magazine editor Will Sampson will details on these and other live projects estimates in his renowned woodworking Pricing Survey at Cabinets & Closets 2016, March 22-24 in Pasadena, California.

WMIA founder Bert Lewyn dies

Bert Lewyn, a founding father of the Woodworking Machinery Importers Association (WMIA), died in his sleep on Sunday, January 3. A holocaust survivor born in Germany in 1923, Lewyn came to the U.S. in 1949 and settled down in Atlanta.

Touring 4 Northwest Pennsylvania lumber mills

Last October I was invited to join my lumber supplier, Intermountain Wood Products, on a tour of four lumber mills in the northwest region of Pennsylvania. The mills, owned by Northwest Hardwoods (NH), Industrial Timber & Lumber (ITL), and Matson Lumber, supply much of the red oak, white oak, cherry, hard maple, and soft maple Intermountain Wood Products sells.

Innovative furniture honored at design competition

eVolo Magazine, an architectural and design journal focused on innovative design, announced the winners of its 2015 VMODERN Furniture Design Competition. The magazine received 233 entries from 34 different countries. A panel of five designers selected three winners with 20 honorable mentions.

Census data shows North Dakota is fastest-growing state; North Carolina tops 10 million

Washington -- North Dakota was the nation's fastest-growing state over the last year, for the fourth year in a row, according to a year-end report from the United States Census Bureau. North Dakota’s population increased 2.3 percent, followed by 1.9 percent growth in Colorado, the District of Columbia and Nevada. Each of the 10 fastest-growing states was in the South or West, with the exception of North Dakota. Texas had the largest numeric increase in population.
