Intereum Sponsors Good Design Challenge by Herman Miller

Plymouth, Minn. - Intereum, a Certified Herman Miller Dealer, is pleased to announce their sponsorship in the Good Design Challenge. Herman Miller, the pioneering American furniture maker with a record of design innovations that have defined modern residential and commercial interiors since the 1930s, has announced its revival of the Herman Miller Collection.

Charles and Ray Eames made notable contributions to Herman Miller’s Collection including the Eames Molded Plastic Chair.

Design Story

In the 1940s, Charles and Ray Eames were looking forward while other American designers were content to stay put. New materials, new techniques, new shapes—these were what interested the Eameses.

The designers were focused on the new plastics as this material held the promise of being able to do more with less. With great enthusiasm they realized that plastic could be molded into organic shapes that would conform to the shape of the body. Thus, we were introduced to the classic Eames Molded Plastic Chair.

To celebrate the launch of Herman Miller’s Collection, Intereum and Herman Miller Minneapolis, are introducing The Good Design Challenge. The spirit of this design challenge is to provide 25 participating Architectural and Design firms the opportunity to take the Eames Molded Plastic Shell chair and design for the 21st Century. Each firm will be given one chair to “artistically enhance”.

Once completed, all 25 chairs will be on display at the Minneapolis AIA Show held November 6-9, 2012. Voting will be available online through Intereum’s Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/intereum) beginning November 6th and running through November 30th.The first place winner will receive a Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. Second place winner will receive a Nelson bench and those earning third through fifth place will receive an Eames Walnut Stool.
