Officials from the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) announced today that a quarantine will be established in Berkshire County, MA, in order to stop the spread of the invasive insect species Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).
Invasive insects like the mountain pine beetle, emerald ash borer and Asian long-horned beetle continue to be a deadly menace to the nation's forests but the overall number of trees being killed by these pests is on the decline.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed the presence of the emerald ash borer (EAB) in the municipality of Ange-Gardien and in Gatineau Park in the municipality of Chelsea, both within the municipalité régionale de comté (MRC) Les-Collines-de-l'Outaouais.
The Nature Conservancy recently kicked off its "Don't Move Firewood" campaign calling on vacationers and campers to be wary of aiding the spread of the emerald ash borer, which has killed tens of millions of ash trees in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states.
As Memorial Day kicks off the vacation and camping season, another summer event takes place: adult emerald ash borers emerge from ash trees to mate and lay eggs.
WOBURN, MA - Arbotjet, a company focused on developing "effective and environmentally sound formulations and equipment" for combating the emerald ash borer, Asian long-horned beetle and other tree-killing insects, claims its products helped save some 350,000 trees in the United States last year.
