CASTLEGAR, B.C. — Kalesnikoff Mass Timber has opened their new 100,000 sq. ft. modular mass timber facility near the West Kootenay Regional Airport to expand their mass timber products for use in multi-story housing structures, schools, daycares, commercial buildings, and other much-needed infrastructure.
This expansion aligns with the Government of Canada and the Province of BC’s commitments to create skilled jobs, and urgently build more affordable homes and other infrastructure using local mass timber.
The new facility complements Kalesnikoff’s existing Mass Timber operation in nearby South Slocan, adding new complementary products including panelized wall and floor systems, prefabricated mass timber components, light frame trusses, volumetric modular offerings and other products designed and manufactured for our clients’ unique needs and construction efficiency.
“We are expanding our mass timber products and expertise to meet the evolving needs of our customers and industry. We are excited to contribute to addressing key challenges like affordable, sustainable and high-quality housing at scale, as well as classroom spaces”, said Chris Kalesnikoff, chief operating officer of Kalesnikoff Mass Timber.
“This new facility represents a significant $30 million investment for Kalesnikoff, and we are thankful to Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Investments’ Forest Industry Transformation program for contributing $3 million to infrastructure and equipment, and to the Province of British Columbia’s Manufacturing Jobs Fund for $6.725 million to help fund the approximately 100 new B.C. jobs that this is creating,” said Krystle Seed, chief financial officer.
“Canada’s innovative, sustainable forest sector creates good jobs, supports communities in British Columbia and across the country, and provides the material that we can use to build our country. Our natural resources are Canada’s power, and I congratulate Kalesnikoff Mass Timber for the ground-breaking opening of North America’s first prefabricated mass timber modular facility, proudly supported by the federal government,” said The Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Canada.
“The future of forestry means getting the right log to the right mill, at the right time, for the right product. That’s why government has made fiber supply for the value-added sector a top priority. And it’s why I immediately doubled BC Timber Sales category 4 sales from 10% to 20% - because industrial buyers need to know that their suppliers like Kalesnikoff can supply their incredibly innovative made-in-B.C. wood products,” said The Honourable Ravi Parmar, Minister of Forests.
