Swedish musician Martin Molin created an ingenious music box using carved wood and approximately 2,000 marble-sized ball bearings. With pulleys, levers and funnels the wood machine recreates the sound of drums, bass and other instruments like the vibraphone and guitar all with the use of a hand cranck to get the marbles moving through the contraption.
Molin, who plays in the band Wintergatan, says at his site began the project in 2014; his videos catalog his use of 3D design software to draw the gears and components, and fashioned the design using a technique similar to moulage, for casting prototype parts.
Molin's work on the Wintergart Marble Machine is documented on video at www.wintergatan.net/#/m.m.machine.
