Modern garage makeover

Elizabeth Sterenberg, design consultant | account manager with The Tailored Closet and PremierGarage of Greater Washington, DC, was tasked with remodeling a two-car garage that would function as the extension of the home. With the help of her team, what she designed and created was a project that completely transformed the space and won the Garage: Under 600 square feet category in the 2024 Top Shelf Design Awards.

According to Sterenberg, the client had moved into a new home in the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Washington, DC, and after a year decided that the detached garage needed to be revamped. The goal was to create a modern, multifunctional space with room for parking two cars, storing their adventure gear and creating an area that seamlessly extended into their living space.

“Our Chevy Chase client wanted to create a garage that was an extension of their home with a cool vibe throughout (and that could comfortably park two cars),” Sterenberg said.  “Our team helped design a garage with a gorgeous Stratus floor, cabinetry for storage (to reduce clutter) with a well-lit workbench, generous slatwall for maximum wall storage to hang tools and outdoor utility items, and bike racks for more wall storage. Overall, the effect is not only cool but also highly functional!”

The project had several goals, including:

  • Create a stylish foundation: A stunning Stratus floor was installed to set a visually appealing tone for the space.
  • Enhance storage and organization: Sleek cabinetry was incorporated to minimize clutter, complemented by a well-lit workbench for practical use.
  • Maximize wall utilization:  Slatwall for versatile storage of tools and outdoor items was included, and bike racks were integrated to optimize the wall space.
  • Functional elegance: Sterenberg wanted the garage to be aesthetically striking, highly functional, and efficient.

Regarding challenges on the project, Sterenberg said two of the main ones included logistical management and coordination with the various trades, such as the local MD 5 Star Painting company for demolition and painting services. Also, design integration was a challenge. Sterenberg noted it was essential to balance the inclusion of specific wall hangings with the need for functional storage space. Plus, careful design was required to keep the center area and side walls clear for parking while showcasing the client’s designs.

“These challenges require a high level of planning, flexibility, and collaboration to overcome effectively,” Sterenberg noted. “Addressing each issue with a proactive approach and careful consideration was key to the project’s success.”
