Software has taken on a growing role in the wood products business as a sales tool. How so? Since applications have the ability to run CNC machines, it was only a matter of time before that same information was translated into graphics that guide the operator in project parts production. Finished jobs are also visualized by rendering those same production files in 3D.

Now suppliers have taken it a step further, developing the ability to make photo-realistic renderings from those same files, even developing interactive screens that allow customers to play “what if” with colors, wood species and other design elements.
Having an effective and flexible design software program is critical in delivering no only beautiful but functional home organization and storage solutions from the pantry to the closet.

Following is a look at several solutions on the market:

Cabinet Vision Version 9, the latest release of the software, represents a significant update. Version 9 delivers over 200 new features and enhancements.

Part of the Vero Software Group, Cabinet Vision is a unique solution for manufacturers in the woodworking industry. Its products help enable any furniture or cabinet manufacturer to fully automate and integrate its design through improved manufacturing processes and greater efficiency.

The company’s brands include Alphacam, Cabinet Vision, Edgecam, Machining STRATEGIST, PEPS, Radan, SMIRT, Surfcam, WorkNC and VISI, along with the production control MRP system Javelin. Despite the diversity of application, these solutions have one thing in common: they all address the rising challenges of achieving manufacturing efficiencies and bring huge value to the operations in which they are deployed.

KCD Software released KCD Cabinet/Closets version 10. On the front end, KCD has rolled their KCD Touch optimized software for tablets, laptops, and PCs into version 10 and expanded its capability for mobile use from design and pricing cabinets, all the way through the building production stage.

On the back-end, the new proprietary technology developed in partnership with award-winning Cabinotch provides cabinetmakers with a distinct industry advantage. Version 10 best software production practices include; Traditional cut listing, Cabinotch precision-cut North American hardwoods and CNC manufacturing.

Custom design and build features in KCD have gone a layer deeper. For instance, in addition to perusing over 100 new door styles in version 10, designers can now easily edit the individual door details like stile and rail dimensions for a truly custom look.

Microvellum’s Fluid Designer Software is based in Blender, a 3D animation suite used by artists, interior designers, gamers and video editors, and features a design experience like no other software available in the woodworking industry.
The company worked with leading closet and cabinet manufacturers to refine Fluid Designer and streamline the solution from the front-end to the backend – one seamless integration from the design to the finished product.

With the seamless connectivity to Microvellum’s manufacturing engine, the Fluid Designer platform has the capacity to be a total solution for manufacturers with dealer networks for closets, face frame or frameless style cabinets.

Mozaik now comes with a “ready to use” closet library. Advanced closet functionality has been added to make it easy to expand and enhance the closet library or create one.

The Mozaik Closet Library has been designed to work with popular knockdown assembly methods. The library is setup and ready to machine on a flatbed CNC Router using Rafix fasteners.  Assembly methods can be easily adjusted to your specification.
Since closets are just another function of Mozaik, users get the benefit of all Mozaik’s built-in features, including TrueShape Nesting.

Closet Pro Software is a responsive solution, which means that it works seamlessly on any size device. The user can literally design a full walk in closet on a smartphone. It’s an internet based solution so there is no software to download and install and you can access it from anywhere using any browser.

The software utilizes the latest in HTML5 technology and offers amazing interactive 3D renderings of a single wall or the entire room, allowing the user to walk into the room, turn head, raise/lower viewpoint and switch between standard and overhead view.

Cabinet Pro’s cabinet design software now features hyper-real graphics, which the company says can make the difference between a successful proposal and one that doesn’t go so well.

Cabinet Pro builds cabinets, either modular or custom, based on the user’s method of construction. Users can customize cutlist reports to show the information in specifics formats, and create frameless cabinets and/or face frame cabinets in the same job.  Door styles can be changed with the click of a few keys. Users can create several bidding methods to give customers accurate bids and invoices. The company’s software is for closet firms, small custom cabinet shops and the large cabinet manufacturers.
