The design industry is constantly evolving, with trends and innovations opening new areas of opportunity for designers. As we move into 2025, we expect to see some exciting changes in how home interiors, including closets, are designed and used, from colors and finishes to materials and room designs. 

The following is a look at the research and predictions for what will be in demand in the upcoming year.

Color trends

Vibrant and versatile color trends are predicted for 2025. Major paint and coatings companies have unveiled their Colors of the Year, offering a glimpse into the hues they believe will be in demand in interior and exterior design. From bold and energetic to calm and inviting, these colors reflect a desire for creativity, comfort, and adaptability in living spaces.   

AkzoNobel’s Color of the Year for 2025 is True Joy, a sunny yellow shade that brings a splash of vibrant color to furniture, flooring, cabinets, and building products. Supported by three complementary color palettes to inspire designers and woodworkers, True Joy is the result of the company’s extensive research into the color, design, cultural, economic, and social trends that shape society. 

Behr’s 2025 Color of the Year is a captivating ruby red called Rumors. Behr says this rich and dynamic hue is designed to bring a sense of drama and elegance to interiors. 

Benjamin Moore has embraced understated elegance with Cinnamon Slate as its 2025 Color of the Year. The company says this nuanced hue is a delicate blend of heathered plum and velvety brown, and its versatility lies in the ability to appear brown, plum, or even gray depending on the light, making it a flexible choice. 

Sherwin-Williams chose a collection of nine hues for its 2025 Colormix Forecast, reflecting a desire for adaptable spaces that evoke comfort and positivity. This palette, designed to mix and match, features warm neutrals like Grounded and Sunbleached, alongside bolder shades like Chartreuse and Malabar. These colors are meant to create a sense of harmony and balance, allowing homeowners to personalize their spaces with a range of moods and styles.

Purple Basil is PPG Paints’ 2025 Color of the Year. This shade blends the tranquility of blue with the vibrancy of red, resulting in a balanced and adaptable hue. Purple Basil has a calming yet energetic presence, encouraging a sense of transformation and renewal within a space, the company says. Its versatility allows it to be easily incorporated into various design schemes and paired with a wide range of colors. 

Valspar has opted for a classic and enduring shade with Encore as its 2025 Color of the Year. This deep, atmospheric blue evokes a sense of timeless elegance and tranquility, offering a versatile backdrop for a variety of design aesthetics. 

Material trends

Sustainability will be a key focus in design in 2025. The Closets State of the Industry 2025 study reveals that sustainability is a growing concern for manufacturers, with a majority making eco-friendly materials and processes a priority. Approximately 60% of respondents reported using sustainable materials in their sourcing and have adopted various sustainable practices in design, with more than 45% of respondents incorporating sustainable materials/sourcing and low-VOC adhesives and finishes into their projects. LED lighting integration is also prevalent, highlighting a focus on energy efficiency.

Additional material trends include laminate becoming an affordable design preference, especially for younger generations. 

According to a study from Formica, Gen Z is driving the shift, particularly in regard to laminate countertops.  The study finds laminate appeals to 86% of Gen Z homeowners, compared to 56% of Boomers, because it is cost-effective and stylish. This generation is currently outpacing Millennials in homeownership rates when compared to Millennials at the same age, and they are influenced by online design content and economic pressures, making them more likely to consider alternative materials to cut renovation costs.

Home design predictions

Houzz shared its top predictions, gained from more than 3 million residential construction and design professionals on its platform, for home design in the United States.

Rounded furniture forms: Furnishings featuring gentle curves and rounded forms are having a serious design moment. Circular coffee and dining tables with cylindrical legs, bulbous sofas and accent chairs, and oblong mirrors are showing up everywhere. The trend stems from a growing interest in organic modern style, which was first highlighted in the 2024 U.S. Houzz Emerging Summer Trends Report. It incorporates natural, organic materials, colors and shapes in a modern way. 

 Arches: Arches, another extension of organic modern style, are showing up frequently in new photos on Houzz. Arches add a touch of playfulness and help soften harsh angles to generate a welcoming, cozy feel. Design and remodeling pros are incorporating arches throughout the home for doorways, windows, niches, cabinets and millwork details.

Woven and mesh cabinet fronts: Woven and mesh details add texture and visual interest. Houzz says they are frequently used to help break up expanses of cabinets, especially in kitchens. Natural woven materials also soften hard edges and provide a warm counterpoint to cold surfaces, two effective strategies for creating a cozy and welcoming space.

Layers of color, pattern and texture: Designers are getting requests from homeowners for a more-is-more approach that layers bold color, pattern and texture. Whether you call it maximalism or “cluttercore,” this design approach celebrates abundance and allows homeowners to furnish their homes with pieces that reflect their personalities. Think grooved wall and ceiling paneling in a bold color, woven materials and patterned everything.
