Eight woodworking firms were named winners of the fifth PureBond Quality Awards, sponsored by Columbia Forest Products. From three project categories — Residential Kitchen, Residential Other, and Commercial — the winners were selected based on their use of PureBond hardwood plywood in a quality finished project.

Ashley Furniture announced it will close its manufacturing plants in Colton, California, and shift the production of the upholstered furniture and bedding to its other plants in the United States. The company notified the 840 employees last week that the plants would close Oct. 25.

Prior to year 2000, the closet industry consisted of the franchises and the other guys. Trying to pull this industry together was like herding cats, until a chance encounter at the Hafele booth at IWF-1998 when Mike Carson saw Closet written on Jeff Klein’s name badge, and visa-verse. ATLANTA – The Woodwork Career Alliance of North America is trying to broaden its reach with woodworking companies, and spoke to Woodworking Network editors during the recent IWF exhibition about its efforts. The skills certification organization has registered about 1,150 passport holders, according to WCA’s Scott Nelson. Passport holders have a record of the skills they possess and have been tested for. Seventy-four machine types are currently included in the program. The machine-based certification is objective.

Tafisa Canada started up of its fifth TFL panel press line for producing two-sided embossed and in-register textured composite panels in 4-foot by 8-foot and 5-foot by 9-foot sizes. The line will aid the production and on-time delivery of its new VIVA panels, whic feature embossed in-register textured surfaces.

The International Woodworking Fair (IWF) issued verified attendee/buyers figures for its 2016 show, which ended August 27. The number rose 10 percent, to over 16,000, compared to 14,400 in 2014. It does not include exhibitor personnel and other attendees, such as educators and media, which bring the total thousands higher.

Many of the displays at IWF featured touch screens, videos and more ways for attendees to engage.
