Lathe for Christmas

My boyfriend wants to get into woodworking so I plan on getting him a lathe for Christmas. Only problem is I know nothing about what makes a good or bad lathe. I would love some suggestions on brands that are good or even suggested models that would make a good gift. I would also love to know what other items he would need to get started with the lathe. Thanks for your help!
