Garden gate splintering - cut against the grain

Some time ago I had a garden gate made to specification from iroko. Unfortunately the top bar has been cut somehow a bit across the grain so that it’s splintering badly. I did notice this when I received it but it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as it is now. Sanding just seems to make it worse. It’s exactly where people will put their hands to open the gate! What can I do about it? Thanks…
