SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Custom woodworking and marquetry specialist SmithMade has expanded its portfolio and now offers veneer panels in addition to tables, flooring, architectural millwork, and bespoke furniture.
Company co-founder Shayn Smith said customer requests stemming from supply chain issues led the Shelby Township, Michigan-based company to launch its veneered panel division. "Since the pandemic, we have had a lot of clients ask us to produce standard book or slip matched panels because of supply chain [disruptions], labor shortages, and logistics costs. We have filled a need for these clients," Smith said.
"We have found it has been a good fit for our company and would like to bring the same quality veneer that we make for our furniture accessible to any cabinet or furniture maker," he added.
Founded by Shayn Smith and Jeff Smith, SmithMade manufactures its products in a 5,000-square-foot shop, outfitted with a 4 x 11-foot veneer press, 4 x 8-foot 1500 watt laser, 52-inch widebelt veneer sander, a veneer stitcher, veneer saw, and horizontal resaw for producing the company's thicker veneer.
The veneer panels are available through the company's website smith-made.com, in a variety of domestic and exotic species including: white oak, maple, cherry, walnut, sapele, eucalyptus, African mahogany, wenge, anigre, santos rosewood, European sycamore, teak, zebrawood and Karelian birch.
Shayn Smith was recognized as a Wood Industry 40 Under 40 by Woodworking Network in 2019.
