ROSEBURG, Oreg. — States Industries, a manufacturer of custom decorative wood panels and components, has partnered with Oregon-based automation integrator 7robotics to modernize and automate a key step in their production process. The result: a custom-built Robotic Drilling & Screwing System that has significantly improved consistency, boosted throughput, and helped meet growing market demand—all without compromising quality or workforce values.

Before the implementation, States Industries relied on manual processes, including CNC setups and handheld screw guns, to assemble their components. Inconsistencies across setups led to variable alignment, slower production, and increased physical strain for operators. As part of their long-term growth strategy, States turned to 7robotics for a system that could address those pain points while fitting into their existing floor space.

By centralizing operations into a single robotic cell, one operator now oversees the full process, reducing repetitive strain and increasing job specialization and retention.

“Operators used to float between tasks, drilling and screwing by hand,” said Dani Fowler, Components Plant manager at States Industries. “There were variations, especially across different setups. The robot now does both operations precisely, and we’ve seen zero product claims since implementation.”

The custom robotic system delivered by 7robotics combines drilling and screwing into one streamlined, high-precision process. Designed for continuous operation and engineered with interchangeable tooling, the system can be adapted for future product lines and scaled across departments.

“After a year, we’re already hitting our five-year production forecast,” said Ted Downs, vice president of Manufacturing at States Industries. “It’s allowed us to reduce variable costs and meet customer demand sooner.”

In addition to productivity gains, the automation project brought significant ergonomic benefits.

“We’ve already ordered a second system,” added Fowler. “That’s how confident we are in the performance and impact of the first.”

States Industries credits the system’s success not only to the technology itself but also to the hands-on support provided by 7robotics. Proximity and partnership were critical throughout the design, integration, and fine-tuning phases.

“It’s invaluable to speak directly with the people at 7robotics who built this instead of a generic support line,” said Downs. “Having a partner that knows our system has saved time and stress.”

The partnership between States Industries and 7robotics reflects a growing trend among regional manufacturers to embrace right-sized automation solutions that support both business goals and workforce development.
