Cabinets & countertops industry: Facts & figures

Challenging is a word frequently used to describe today’s business climate. Participants in KCMA’s September Trend of Business Survey reported a 5.6% decrease in sales compared to 2024, with custom sales down 5.5%, semi-custom dropping 6.7%, and stock dipping 1.2%. Cabinet quantity also decreased by 8.7% compared to the September 2024 figures.

Consumer uncertainty, tariffs and higher supply costs were also reflected by the flat (50 out of 100) score for the Q3 NKBA/John Burns Kitchen & Bath Market Index. Sales dropped 4%, with all segments reporting weaker year-over-year sales. That said, surveyed firms are cautiously optimistic for 2026, anticipating mid-single-digit growth in their preliminary outlook.

For a global perspective, The Business Research Co. projects the market at $176.9 billion USD in 2025, and grow to $235.24 billion by 2029, with a CAGR of 7.4% during the forecast period.

Renovations are a key growth area. Homeowners can expect to recover 60% of the kitchen and 50% bathroom costs when they sell, according to NARI’s 2025 Remodeling Impact Report.

Quick Stats (Includes items not shown in print.)

• Stock cabinets are on the rise, increasing in favor by 3 percentage points year over year, to 12%, according to the 2025 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study. However, they remain far behind both custom (45%) and semi-custom (32%) cabinets. Ready-to-assemble styles account for 9% of cabinet choices.

• Homeowners are rethinking kitchen storage, with growing interest in freestanding pantry furniture, multifunctional butler's pantries, and flexible storage solutions that can be placed outside the kitchen, say experts at MasterBrand Cabinets. These changes are driven by a desire to maximize usable space while keeping the kitchen uncluttered. Walk-in and butler's pantries remain staples in new construction, but remodelers are increasingly sacrificing linen closets or other storage areas to create dedicated pantry spaces.

• Honed, matte finishes and countertops lighter in color than the cabinets are desired by the majority of consumers, says the NKBA/KBIS 2026 Kitchen Design Trends report’s three-year prediction. For material choices, quartz (78%), quartzite (62%) and granite (43%) ranked highest. Marble was the third highest choice for the bathroom, according to the 2026 Bath Design Trends report.

• Although the median spend declined in 2024, kitchens ($22,000) and primary bathrooms ($13,000) continue to command the highest renovation budgets. The median spend on guest bathroom renovations held steady at $6,000, according to the 2025 U.S. Houzz & Home study.

• The global outdoor kitchen cabinets market is projected to reach $5.1 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 5.8% from 2021 to 2030, according to Allied Market Research.
