As with many industry segments impacted by tariffs, rising supply costs and economic uncertainty, “challenging” and “new normal” describe the current residential furniture market.
After a rise the previous month, new residential furniture orders fell 3% in August, compared to the year prior, with shipments down 6% for the same period although up 5% compared to July 2025, noted Mark Laferriere, assurance partner at Smith Leonard, in the October issue of Furniture Insights. “Most buyers (at High Point Market) also seem to understand that tariffs in some form or fashion are here to stay, and they are ready to move forward.”
Still, manufacturers’ creativity was out in full force at the show, with many showing smaller and/or traditional silhouettes, florals, plaids and other patterns, and warmer colors, among the trends.
