Furniture Transport Group ceasing operationsLENOIR, NC -- Furniture Transport Group (FTG), whose client list reads like a who's who of the furniture industry, will shut down operations at its facilities in Lenoir and High Point, NC, and sell off all of its assets.

The action will put the jobs of aproximately 600 people at risk, according to The Business Journal, noting that the company is hoping that the final layoff tally will be fewer.

Meanwhile, dozens upon dozens of FTG's customers will have to determine what impact the impending closing will have on transportation of their products. A small sampling of client names listed on Caldwell Freight Lines' website include Baker, Bssett, La-Z-Boy and Thomasville.

FTG was formed following the 2007 merger of MGM Transport Corp. with CF Holding Company Inc. (CF),a furniture transportation group consisting of Caldwell Freight Lines Inc. and Foothills Trucking Co. Inc. Several other trukcing companies were absorbed in ensuing years.

"By adding MGM Transport Corp. with its strength and reputation for innovation and technology, and its dedication to leadership in logistical operations, CF is positioned to become the strongest specialized furniture carrier group in North America. “It certainly isn’t just our size that will make this group a powerhouse in the industry," said CF's CEO Dave Brenner at the time of the merger. "Our collective customers can expect seamless operations, more points of pickup and delivery, more warehousing and distribution footage, as well as a larger coverage map…we really don’t see anything but a win-win.”
