Douglas fir and hemlock boards were among the sources for the latest reclaimed wood product, Kirei Windfall engineered panels, shown on this issue’s cover and in the coffee shop at right. They are manufactured from recycled lumber from industrial demolition sites.

Kirei Windfall engineered panels (see more at kireiusa.com) carry with them the colorful character and variations often found in reclaimed wood. “This is old-growth wood that just can’t be found any more,” says John Stein, Kirei USA president.

Manufactured in partnership with Windfall Lumber of Tumwater, WA, the panels find use in architectural millwork and finished products in residential, commercial, hospitality and retail applications. From raw beams and boards brought into Windfall Lumber’s factory, the vivid natural wood grain patterns of the old-growth wood is reborn, and can be provided in a variety of stain and finish options that give the reclaimed material new life for applications like wall paneling, signage, retail displays, etc. The uniform construction combines with the natural variation of the wood to create a look that can be modern, rustic or somewhere in between.

Windfall Lumber transforms the varying dimensioned lumber into a laminated strip construction panel. Because Kirei Windfall is manufactured using low-VOC adhesives, indoor emissions are reduced.

The reclaimed wood used in the manufacture of Kirei Windfall keeps the old material from landfills. Kirei says Windfall panels can contribute to LEED and other green building credits for reclaimed/recycled content, certified wood, indoor air quality and the regional materials credits for projects within a 500-mile radius of the manufacturing facility.

Panels come unfinished, with a clear coat that shows off the natural grain, or stained and prefinished in Anthracite, Mocha, Ivory and Leather colors. The finish here is Osmo Ebony with Osmo Polyx clear coat on top. (These finishes are shown at osmona.com.)

“In this case the panels were finished by the installer,” says John Stein, president of Kirei USA. Panel sizes available in 27x96 inches (solid) 48x96 inches (3-ply with NAUF/FSC core), with a 3/4-inch panel thickness.
