Planing and sanding fuzzy soft maple

Q. We are planing and sanding some soft maple that seems to have a lot of fuzz. Is high MC the cause?

A. Yes, High MC is often the cause. However, with soft maple, the problem is more likely tension wood...a special type of wood that has more cellulose components (which are weak) and fewer lignin components (which are string). Such wood is usually noticeably lighter in weight as well, compared to normal. Sharp fresh sandpaper helps a lot as well as sharp HSS. Sanding sealer is also effective.
