Spray finishing event is back by popular demand

KITCHENER, ON — The Wood Manufacturing Cluster of Ontario has announced the return of the spray finishing training at Conestoga College. Scheduled for Thursday, July 4th, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Woodworking Centre on the Doon Campus, this event is a must for anyone looking to enhance their finishing skills.

This comprehensive training session, led by David Blackler, a professor and finishing technologist at Conestoga College, is designed to improve the skill set of your finishing knowledge. Whether you're a new or experienced spray operator, or a manager in the finishing department, this training offers insights and practical skills that can lead to improvements in your processes.

Registration includes all necessary materials, a catered lunch, and access to a state-of-the-art spray simulator for hands-on training.

The training is divided into two parts: in-class theory and practical shop training. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect:

  • In-class training (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM)
  • Practical shop training (1:00 PM - 4:00 PM)
     
  • Equipment:

    HVLP (high volume, low pressure) spray equipment – pros and cons
    Airless – air assist – pros and cons
     
  • Typical spray material:

    Stains – spray, wipe, water-based, solvent-based
    Sealer and topcoats
    Pigmented lacquer
    Troubleshooting: identifying root causes
    Quality assurance and process control
    Training on the virtual spray system
    Adjusting spray guns
    Application techniques

Following the in-class theory, participants will engage in practical shop training using simulators. This hands-on session will solidify the theoretical knowledge gained during the morning and provide skills that can be directly applied to your work.
