MUNICH, Germany — Attia Design introduced COCOON-Freelancer, a mobile living space constructed entirely from wood. The company said COCOON-Freelancer is free from chemical treatments, glue, and plastics, rendering a VOC-free indoor environment.

Inspired by the enduring Alpine houses and Japanese temples that have stood for 500 to 1,500 years, COCOON-Freelancer integrates traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. The use of moonwood-timber, harvested in alignment with lunar cycles during the coldest months, when the sap flow is at rest and sugar content is lower, ensures optimal durability and resistance to insects, mold, and deformation. According to Attia Design, this method eliminates the need for chemical preservatives, enhances the wood’s value and quality over time, and produces 100% recyclable organic waste.

The interior features a transformative bed lounge and workspace, storage, an efficient TinyStove, a gas kitchen, and stainless steel water system.

The exterior wood develops a natural gray patina through aging, making it weather-resistant and protecting the core from water and sun rays. The longitudinal wood is arranged to avoid uncovered end-grain wood, which is susceptible to water absorption and deterioration, unlike the longitudinal wood, which is naturally water-repellent. In addition, there are no screws on the exterior wood surfaces, preventing areas from becoming susceptible to water absorption and premature aging.

The COCOON-Freelancer has been recognized by AMP Architecture MasterPrize 2024: Honorable Mention in Architectural Design – Transportation, and BLT Built Design Awards 2024: Honorable Mention in Interior Design.
