In Toronto's east end, Weiss Architecture + Urbanism designed the Shudell House to creatively address the challenges of aging-in-place and the narrow dimensions of urban lots.
The owners, a travel writer and a retired buffalo rancher with children, wanted a flexible home that could adapt to their changing needs. They also wanted a laneway house that could eventually serve as a caregiver's residence.
The house's design pays homage to the neighborhood, known as "The Pocket," which was once a hub for brick manufacturing. The buff and dark-brown brickwork, along with a traditional diamond pattern on the top story, help the new home blend in with its historic surroundings while giving it a modern feel.
Unlike older homes in the area that have raised porches, Shudell House features a grade-level entrance through a sheltered patio, making it easily accessible. Inside, the design incorporates an elevator, a roll-
in shower, and a kitchen that can be easily converted to universal accessibility standards.
To counteract the deep, narrow lot, the architects incorporated light wells, skylights, and a double-height dining area to fill the interior with natural light.
