Gap at end of counter

I had to move this base cabinet away from the adjacent perpendicular cabinet to allow the drawers to open which will be installed in it. This also necessitated removing the piece of countertop over this cabinet. I'm trying to figure out how to deal with the ¾" gap that now exists, either between the two pieces of countertop or at the end of the counter. This piece of the countertop was fastened to the adjacent countertop by pocket screws which I can replace if the remedy is to insert a piece on the end. I have a remnant of the butcher block and the only solution I can think of is to cut a ¾" strip, seal it and fasten it either as an insert between the two countertop pieces or on the end. If that's the way to go, then how should I fasten it? Pocket screws seem like overkill for a strip that's three quarters of an inch wide. I'm obviously not a woodworker but doing this myself is the only option available to me and I want to do it as well as possible.
