10 things to consider before buying ERP

When selecting an ERP solution, it’s not just buying software off the shelf. You’re entering into a partnership that will change your operations for several years if not a decade or more.

The four ‘Cs’ to remember when evaluating enterprise resource planning systems are:

  • Complete: Choose a fully integrated system.
  • Comprehensive: Look for an ERP system that has the latest tech and features, but is also easy to use.
  • Customizable: The ERP should allow you to create tailored reports and options without requiring modifications by the vendor.
  • Cohesive: Ensure that all the different modules available with the ERP work together seamlessly.

As you’re researching and reaching out to ERP providers, here are some important things to remember and good questions to ask:

About the service:

1.    What are their average hold times when you call in?
2.    Where is their support team based and do they offer 24-hour support?
3.    Do the supplier offer ongoing, free training after implementation?

About the software:
4.    How frequently are updates made to the system?
5.    Does the software have the ability to successfully integrate with the software I am already using?
6.    Will this ERP system run on what I already own, or will I have to buy a new system?
7.    Are there any hidden long-term costs or fees?
8.    Is this shop floor module robust and inclusive?
9.    How is the quality module?
10.  Does the inventory module look complete and simple to use?
