American Woodmark Q1 Profits Up 3%

WINCHESTER, VA -- American Woodmark Corp. reported net sales of $222.75 million, an increase of 3%, for the first quarter of fiscal year 2007 ended July 31. Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2007, the company said it continues to expect a mixed environment for remodeling and new construction demand that will support sales growth of 1% to 5% over the prior year.

Hekman to Cease Grand Rapids Manufacturing Operations

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Hekman Furniture Co., a manufacturer of high-end residential furnishings, announced it will shut down production in Grand Rapids. The move will eliminate about 60 jobs, according to the Kalamzoo Gazette. The paper quoted Hekman President Dan Masters as saying, ?As our business has been flat and we?ve gotten more of a reaction from our imported-designed product, the value relationship from offshore is greater than what we can produce in Grand Rapids.

Rowe to Close Missouri Facilities

MCLEAN, VA -- Rowe Furnishings announced it will close its upholstery and framing plants in Popular Bluff, MO. According to the Sikeston Democrat Standard, the operations will be consolidated into the company?s Elliston and Salem, VA, facilities as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization plan. The closing will affect the jobs of about 400 workers, but more workers are expected to be hired in Elliston. Rowe also announced that it plans to sell its Storehouse retail chain and focus on manufacturing.

Herman Miller Reports Q1 Net Up

ZEELAND, MI -- Herman Miller Inc. announced it achieved a 20.3% rise in net income for the first quarter that ended Sept. 2. The company says year-over-year gains were achieved in sales, orders and net earnings even before factoring the impact of the extra week of operations included in the year-ago period. Sales for the quarter reached $449.7 million and orders for the quarter exceeded $500 million for the first time in more than five years.
