Wood Technology Innovations Seen for Ligna, Interzum 2013HANNOVER - Lach Diamond today announced a tooling innovation - a superfinishing tool for prepping panel edges that will be run through laser edgebanders. Interestingly, it addresses an issue in wood production that hadn't existed before other new technologies came along.

The tool itself, called dreboflash, is noteworthy as a solution to an opportunity presented by two other technologies that saw major launches at the 2011 version of Interzum and Ligna: laser edgebanding machinery, and the specialized edgeband material they apply to panels.

These devices, available from IMA, Homag, and others, can create what is being called the "Zero join," a virtually seamless edge where the banding and the panel surfaces meet. The laser application of edgebanding material - offered by Rehau and Doellken-Woodtape - also offers creative potential in allowing for uniquely designed edgebanding material.

Now with more than 100 laser edgebanders installed worldwide, figuring out how to prep the edge of the panel becomes important. The finer the surface is ground, the more evenly the edgebanding can be applied by the laser edgebander. This allows the edgebander to realized its full potential for a seamless edge.

The newly developed dreboflash Diamond Jointing Cutters offers precision comparable to metal working, says Horst Lach of Lach Diamond. "This technology and the new various types of surface coatings on different carrier plates encouraged the engineers at Lach Diamond to develop a superfinish tool program for the preprocessing of the Laser Edge."

The introduction of this technology is a byproduct of other new technologies that originated at Ligna and Interzum. WoodworkingNetwork is covering the new introductions as we hear about them:

And will be at the German shows in May to report back in real time on a daily basis.

Interzum 2013, which focuses on materials and hardware, runs May 13-16 in Cologne, Germany

Ligna 2013, running May 6-10 in Hannover, features technology, machinery and systems.
