The “Wave buffet, designed by Luis Lozada of Industrial Design Form, Miami, FL, won top honors in this year’s Design Portfolio awards. It is shown here in African lacewood, with solid mahogany bases.

Sensuous curves and simple lines highlight the Residential Furniture winner in this year’s Design Portfolio awards. The contemporary buffet, a limited edition piece entitled “Wave, also earned the highest marks of all entrants, making it this year’s Overall Winner. It was designed by Industrial Design Form of Miami, FL.

“My ideas are principally based on curves that come from simple lines, creating a sensuous look, says Luis Lozada, industrial designer. “This curved design enhances the color and texture of the African lacewood used on this particular unit.

Designer Luis Lozada says that his ideas are based on curves that come from simple lines to create a sensuous look.
The entire structure is suspended on solid mahogany bases, which represent the same curved detail seen in the upper part of the buffet, Lozada adds. Designed in a modular concept, the straight section is independent from the structure for ease in moving and delivery.

The detail of the diagonal cut in the upper front part of the buffet adds to its elegant and sensuous appearance, he says. It also solved a difficulty Lozada encountered in designing the piece. In the initial designs, the reveal of the cabinet was landing in the central drawer. Lozada was able to divide the interior, while still maximizing storage possibilities.

The interior layout features drawers and adjustable shelves with a fabric lining to be clean, practical and functional. Fine suede is used on the piece shown, but other fabrics are available. The storage options make the piece suitable as dining room, conference room or office furniture, Lozada says.
