FRAGMENTED MARKET
BUSINESS The kitchen cabinetry market regained profitability in 2013 as housing and remodeling recovered. The overall market for cabinetry is $9 billion, but it is highly fragmented, with 9,000 total manufacturers selling to builders and through designers, dealers, and big box stores. Seven U.S. cabinet firms hold around one-third of the market.
Retailers and dealers have adopted software design programs, some of which link directly to manufacturing, allowing highly customized production with “batch one” run lengths. RFID and bar code systems are being used to track work in process through delivery.
DESIGN Gray color schemes and frameless, transitional-style cabinetry are growing more popular, especially among younger consumers, along with hardware-free, touch-activated doors and drawers. Universal design for aging and multigenerational families also is having an impact.
Designs trends also favor white painted cabinets though natural finishes are still popular. “Solid” countertops (stone, synthetics, wood) are gaining ground on laminates.
