75% of exclusive hardwood may be illegally harvested

The tropical wood type ipê is popular for building exclusive wooden decks, and in North America and Europe, the demand for the material has increased sharply. Now, a study from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, shows that more than three-quarters of all ipê from the top-producing region in Brazil could have been harvested illegally. "The study reveals where in the chain the greatest risks lie. It can be a tool to counteract illegal logging," said Caroline S.S. Franca, PhD student at Chalmers.

3-way concealed hinge

The HGS3D-S160SH is a 3-way adjustable stainless steel concealed hinge from Sugatsune America Inc. that allows vertical, horizontal, and depth adjustment after the hinge is installed. The hinge is made from 304 stainless steel, which the company says provides excellent corrosion resistance. Three hinges can support doors up to 36″ x 96″ weighing up to 220 lbs. The hinge has successfully passed a 300,000 open/close cycle test.

The Woodworking Machinery and Supply Conference & Expo, held November 2-4 at the International Centre in Mississauga drew attendees from nine provinces and all sectors of the industry, including manufacturers of furniture, cabinets, architectural woodwork, closets, and a myriad of other wood products manufacturers. The event marked the return of WMS for the first time since 2019, after COVID-related cancellations.
