North Carolina lumber business Fitch Lumber has been named a Living Wage Certified Employer by an area non-profit focused on raising the number of living-wage career opportunities in Orange County, North Carolina.
"This will double our production of high quality hardwood lumber," said DCI President Henry Kober. "It will also enable us to hire up to four additional employees."
For over 100 years, U.S.-flag ships carried lumber from the West Coast to the East and Gulf coasts. About 40 ships were regularly employed in this trade, making about 200 voyages annually.
The lawmakers’ bipartisan bill (House - H.R. 7690; Senate - S. 4223) would establish a new program at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to provide direct payments to timber harvesting and hauling businesses.
