ANDERSON, S.C. – A 22-month-old child was injured and later died at an area hospital when a dresser overturned on the toddler.
In a statement from the county coroner's office, Greg Shore, Coroner, said his office is investigating the July 30 death of Jalaya Bryant from Calhoun Falls, S.C.
Anderson County EMS, Medshore EMS, and the Anderson County Sheriff’s responded to a home in Williamston, S.C., for a child in cardiac arrest. Family members discovered the child under a dresser drawer that had overturned on the child, according to the coroner's office.
The child was taken to local hospital, Prisma Health Trauma Services, and was pronounced deceased at the hospital at 12:22 p.m.
The investigation is being conducted by the multiagency Anderson County Child Death Investigation Task Force.
Don McCown, Chief Deputy Coroner, said the child was staying at her grandparents’ house and apparently was trying to climb a dresser when it tumbled over and trapped her. The investigation indicates the child died due to asphyxiation and there appears to be no indication of foul play, McCown said.
