Ember from woodworking operations sparks dust collector fire

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The Nebraska State Fire Marshal's office says ember from woodworking operations traveled into a dust collector and ignited a Friday, Jan. 9, fire at the Crewdson Creations and Log Cabin Sawmill’s woodworking shop area, destroying the building and major equipment.

According to news station KNOP, firefighters brought the blaze under control Friday evening, but crews encountered a large amount of lumber at the site. Chief Dennis Thompson said firefighters remained on scene throughout the night to extinguish remaining hot spots and damp down material to prevent reignition.

The owners were operating a woodworking machine when it began to spark and the dust-collection system caught fire. The owners thought they had put the flames out in the piping, but embers had reached the collection bag and continued to smolder.
