Brooklyn, NY – What’s in a name? For the Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary design studio Think Fabricate it’s more than just the furniture moniker. Walnut is the star of the company’s four new storage solutions including Fleur de Noyer, TV Quilt, Walnutopia and Wall*nuts for its rich color, unique patterns, natural strength, and lustrous sheen. Add its refined appearance and ability to be easily paired with other woods and it becomes apparent why walnut suits Think Fabricate’s distinctive blend of traditional and contemporary motifs.

According to Think Fabricate co-founder Jason Gorsline, “We particularly enjoy quarter-sawn French walnut. The quarter-sawn effect gives the wood a consistent grain pattern that is directional; juxtaposed against the natural figure, it gives the wood beautiful texture.”

Susan Doban, of Think Fabricate, adds, “Walnut is naturally capable of displaying deep browns, caramels and even purples to create dynamic patterns of color. When we pair these patterns with shocks of complimentary colors and woods like bamboo in our furnishings, it creates a lively composition of material, color, and texture.”

Fleur de Noyer

The Fleur de Noyer chest of drawers is characterized by clean, modern lines and a decorative fleur-de-lys motif, but the lily is not the product’s only connection to the natural world. Fleur de Noyer shows off walnut’s handsome qualities with a solid walnut frame and rounded corners as well as a walnut veneer casement to create a vibrant, quilted look. Available in varying depths, heights and widths and with two to nine drawers, the piece’s more modern features compliment the traditional, handsome sheen of the walnut body. Optional open storage below the drawers (for shoes or newspapers), bamboo drawer fronts, engravings and silkscreen patterns of morphing swallows add even more character to the line. Another modern innovation is “fleur-de-tech:” A fully integrated brushed aluminum charging station that offers multiple outlets for charging gadgets without the mess of wires.

TV Quilt

TV Quilt is a dynamic and customizable series of cabinets, artfully composed to form a beautiful wall unit. With doors and drawers closed, it exhibits the refined delicacy of a patchwork quilt. Each unit features a slightly different design thanks to the natural variation of patterns and coloration in authentic French walnut. However, pulling a drawer, flipping a panel, or sliding a door reveals myriad storage opportunities and colorfully painted interior elements, which are also revealed on the sides. Available in two standard sizes – Brooklyn TV Quilt (52”H x 60”W x 18”D) and Lofty TV Quilt (60”H x 110”W x 18”D) – it can accommodate a TV up to 32” and 42,” respectively. The line’s latest addition includes an optional built-in bar, large enough to accommodate any city dweller’s adult beverage needs.

Walnutopia

A portmanteau of walnut and utopia, this brand new furniture line lives up to the name. It features two unique 18”x18” side tables – book-matched or asymmetrical – and a 24”x24” quadrant. The soft, swirling patterns of walnut and the gently rounded solid walnut corners bring warmth to the collection’s cube shapes. Optional silkscreened designs and bamboo plywood drawers offer a dramatic accent to each piece.

Wall*nuts

While the TV Quilt is capable of filling an entire wall, sometimes people just need a little extra space. The Wall*nuts line of diminutive cabinets is adaptive, sculptural, even playful. Each piece is crafted from solid walnut with optional silkscreened designs that create a dynamic juxtaposition between natural and handmade patterns. Varying frame sizes, depths and optional add-ons such as a bamboo or walnut veneer door or cabinet back allow for further customization to create individual elements of style or a collage of complimentary pieces. Brand new additions to the collection include Wall*nut Mirror – a Wall*nut cabinet with a mirrored back – and Wall*nut Catchall – a long, horizontal cabinet with an optional sliding door with water jet cut design and built-in charging station.

Think Fabricate was co-founded by Susan Doban and Jason Gorsline in November 2009 as a multidisciplinary design studio affiliated with Doban Architecture. Gorsline is a former principal at A&G Designs, where he was design director. Doban is an award winning architect and founder of Doban Architecture. About Doban Architecture

Susan Doban leads Doban Architecture, an award winning 12-person architectural practice in downtown Brooklyn. Doban has 25 years of experience in the design and management of architectural, planning, and furnishing projects, including numerous educational, commercial, residential, and economic development projects in the region. Under her leadership, the firm has completed more than 60 capital improvements for New York City School Construction Authority. Before founding Susan Doban Architect, PC, in 1996, Doban was an associate at Fox & Fowle Architects. She has her M.Arch from Columbia University and her BA from Harvard. She is an active VP on the Board of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and a recipient of a Kinne Travelling Fellowship for study of American Urban Waterfronts.
