-- Commemorating its 100th anniversary, Fagus-GreCon is proud and delighted to hear that its Fagus factory (German: Fagus-Werk) in Alfeld has been classified as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. The decision for the Fagus-GreCon factory was made by UNESCO world cultural heritage committee at the 35th meeting in Paris. “Of course we are happy that the efforts we have made over decades to preserve the valuable factory building, designed by Walter Gropius, have been appreciated and now are also honoured by UNESCO“, says Ernst Greten, managing director of Fagus-GreCon, and Karl Schünemann, who is responsible for handling the application process. "However, without years of effort, and active external assistance by the Federal State Government, the State Office for the preservation of historical monuments in Lower Saxony, and many public figures, we would never have reached this goal. We count on these continued partnerships and assistance", says Ernst Greten, "because it is our objective to preserve and maintain this exemplary Walter Gropius building for coming generations."

Still home to the Fagus-GreCon company, the factory building was built in 1911 by Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer and is considered the seminal building of the modern movement in architecture. The architects succeeded in creating an absolutely unusual appearance completely different from traditional designs. A century later, the timeless factory building now classified as a historical monument, still fulfills its original purpose and is seen as a success story of exemplary industry culture of the 20th century.

Fagus-GreCon and its factory celebrate its 100th anniversary this year. Since its foundation, the building has continuously been used for production: now and as before, Fagus shoe lasts are still part of the product range. In addition, today's products also include finger-jointing lines sold under the Grecon Dimter trademark as well as GreCon measurement systems and spark detection and extinguishing systems. With its latest product developments and inventions presented at this year´s Ligna in Hanover, the GreCon business unit has shown to be the driving force of the industry and has underscored its international technological leadership. Among others, two particular products are examples of its long-established motto, “Innovation is our Tradition”. The new device for spark extinguishing systems, the GreCon Touch is an intelligent multi-touch display that makes system operations easier and more efficient and provides data faster and more effectively. The brand-new measurement system CONTILOG is a small electronic component that conducts wireless temperature and gas pressure measurements during hot pressing.

Along with Fagus-GreCon´s tradition to continuously innovate its products and corporate culture, the company strives to preserve its important history and factory building. The Fagus factory has been a classified historical monument since 1946 and was laboriously restored over the course of many years, a fact that thousands of visitors, originating from many countries, have already seen. Of particular interest is the Fagus Gropius exhibition, which opened for the EXPO 2000. It is situated in the center of the production hall and is open to visitors. Meanwhile the Walter Gropius building is a location for various cultural events, such as exhibitions and concerts. It has become an established part of the cultural life in the Alfeld region and Lower Saxony.
