The modern closet: A space for experience
By Jenna Shock

Most of today’s clients want environments that feel personal, intentional, and reflective of how they live. Luxury, in this context, is no longer defined by size or spend, but by how seamlessly a space supports daily life.

It begins with personalization — designing not just for what a client owns, but for how they live. Thoughtful material choices and details, such as velvet-lined accessory drawers, reinforce this by creating a refined, tactile experience. And ultimately, it’s achieved through functionality that feels effortless. When a space works intuitively, it becomes something clients don’t just use but truly appreciate.

In many ways, it’s less about cost and more about meaning. Think of Ariel’s grotto in The Little Mermaid — a collection of objects displayed in rock nooks that function as shelves. While simple, it felt extraordinary because her space was curated, personal, and deeply valued. That same principle applies to the spaces we create. When a closet reflects the individual, it becomes something far more than functional. It becomes their sanctuary.

As this shift continues, the role of professional development and industry standards becomes even more important. Through education, shared best practices, and a commitment to elevating our craft, the Association of Closet and Storage Professionals (ACSP) supports its members in delivering spaces that go beyond storage. By fostering collaboration and innovation, we help designers and businesses translate these evolving expectations into meaningful, well-executed solutions for their clients.

As president of ACSP, I see this evolution happening more and more across our industry. Our members are redefining what luxury means — proving that a bespoke experience isn’t reserved for large spaces or large budgets, but is rooted in thoughtful, intentional design.

When we approach our work through this lens, we do more than organize. We create spaces that support, inspire, and elevate our clients’ everyday lives, offering them a tailored luxury experience. Their closet just might become their favorite room in the house.
