Veneer grading seminar set for Wood Pro Expo Lancaster

LANCASTER, Pa. — Accuracy in selecting and grading veneers is a skill that takes years to develop. As the workforce ages, manufacturers rely on skills such as this to be transitioned from retiring employees to younger, less experienced associates. Often times some of the fundamentals of the art are lost in the process.

The seminar, with catered lunch provided, will be held on October 23 and 24 at 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. This gives attendees two chances not to miss the valuable information provided by Simon and Fred Mitchell, another veneer expert hosting the seminar. Each seminar will have a limit to 50 attendees, so reserve your spot before it runs out by contacting your Veneer Tech or Columbia Forest Products sales rep for discounted registration prices.

The veneer grading workshop at Wood Pro Expo Lancaster will provide attendees with a detailed look at how veneer is evaluated, obtaining a better grasp on grade values, and why the grading process matters for the entire supply chain.

Greg Simon, Veneer Technologies sales manager and Veneer Grading Seminar keynote speaker at this year's Wood Pro Expo Lancaster.

"One of the most eye-opening aspects of veneer grading is realizing that the material is never limited to a single type of grade," says Greg Simon, face sales manager at Veneer Technologies. "Large volume orders often contain a mix, ranging from higher-quality cuts to pieces with natural imperfections. Understanding this full spectrum gives end users a more accurate picture of what they are purchasing and working with."

“Seeing the range is valuable,” Simon continues. “It helps customers understand that veneer isn’t uniform, and that imperfections can still add value depending on the application.”

Different industry players will find takeaways tailored to their needs. Cabinetmakers will gain clarity on how to select the most suitable grade for their projects. Distributors can benefit from a better understanding of the variability in veneer quality, which can enhance how they communicate with and supply their customers. The session will also address current market conditions, including the surge in demand for white oak, sometimes referred to as the “white oak rage”, and how pressures on supply may affect availability on certain in-demand materials.

The workshop is designed to help attendees set expectations about veneer sourcing and use. By examining the grading process directly, end users will walk away with practical knowledge that can improve purchasing decisions and strengthen their ability to meet customer demands.
