Design Portfolio: Creating spaces with light basis weight papers & foils

Light Basis Weight Papers (LBWP) and Decorative Foils offer exceptional print fidelity, bringing patterns and textures to life with stunning realism. These versatile, paper-based laminates are widely used in cabinets, store fixtures, paneling, shelving, closet systems, and home and office furniture, providing a high-quality yet cost-effective solution for designers and manufacturers. Advanced finishing techniques such as chemical, optical, or gloss matte embossing enhance the authenticity of woodgrain and natural designs, making them a valued choice for customers.

LBWP ranges from 23 to 50 g/m², while Decorative Foils vary between 40 and 200 g/m². These laminates can be pre-impregnated with acrylic, polyester, or other resins, increasing internal bond strength by 20-50% of the base paper weight. Once printed, they are topcoated with polyurethane, urea, polyester, acrylic, melamine, or a combination of these for enhanced durability and longevity. Decorative Foils, also known as impregnated papers, are particularly suited for high-wear applications where scratch resistance is essential. While impregnation alone qualifies them as foils, many receive an additional protective topcoat, often called “finished foils,” for added durability.

LBWP and Decorative Foils are available in standard and industrial grades, each tailored to different application needs. Standard-grade papers contain lower resin content, making them an economical choice for general use, while industrial-grade papers, with a higher resin content, offer improved processing performance and machining capabilities. These laminates provide flexibility in design by allowing single-sided paneling, eliminating the need to laminate both sides to achieve a balanced panel. Additionally, they can be profile wrapped for seamless trim matching with flat surfaces, depending on weight.

Creative Spaces with Light Basis Weight Papers & Foils
Light basis weight papers and decorative foils offer vibrant colors and high-quality prints, bringing style and function to furniture, shelving, and storage solutions, unlocking endless possibilities and blending vibrant colors and high-fidelity designs to elevate any space.

Both materials accommodate various adhesive systems during lamination and can also be supplied precoated with hot melt adhesive, enabling direct hot roll lamination without additional adhesive application. The final appearance and performance of laminated panels depend on the adhesive system and substrate quality.

From home and office décor to retail fixtures, stylish furniture to sleek shelving to innovative storage solutions, these materials infuse beauty, durability, and creativity into everyday living, transforming ordinary surfaces into extraordinary expressions of design. With their blend of beauty, durability, and cost efficiency, LBWP and Decorative Foils continue to be a trusted choice for enhancing residential and commercial interiors.

CASE STUDY: Laminates Take Hold in Retail Displays
Custom slatwall, retail display panels, fixtures and wood components are among the items produced at Amerhart Ltd.’s Sheboygan Falls facility. Well known for its quality standards, the company uses panels overlaid with both decorative foils and high pressure laminates for many of products made under the Wind Mill brand.

Along with the wide range of colors, patterns, and textures available, durability is a main reason laminates are used in many of the company’s products, said Dennis Zolp, operations leader/director of manufacturing. In addition, the laminated panels provide an excellent alternative for vertical applications and/or flat surfaces in a variety of commercial environments, he said. HPL panels are also used in numerous applications.

Ease of maintenance, especially for high-traffic areas, is another benefit of the laminates, Zolp noted.  Machinability is another. In addition to in-house laminating, the Sheboygan facility’s capabilities include CNC machining, straight and contour edgebanding, finishing, and prototyping.

And when it comes to the sustainability of the products, Zolp noted, “I don’t get that question asked a lot, but we do advertise that we are sustainable.”  The company is FSC certified, and the website promotes recycled content is used in its substrate cores and that the mills are certified to the Composite Panel Association’s Environmentally Preferred Product standard, TSCA Title VI compliant.
