The federal Economic Development Administration has approved a grant of nearly $450,000 to Oregon State University to jump-start the use of new engineered wood products in the building industry.

One of the tallest wood buildings in the world will soon be constructed at UBC, providing housing for hundreds of students. When completed, the $51.5-million residence building will stand 53 meters tall -about 174 feet.

The Chicago Horizon project was designed by Ultramoderne, a Rhode Island architectural group, for a competition, and represents "a quest to create the largest wood roof possible."

Lumber producer Sierra Pacific Industries gave $6 million to the College of Forestry at Oregon State University. The lumber producer is supporting construction of an advanced wood products laboratory, part of OSU’s Oregon Forest Science Complex that will create a new home for the college. Plum Creek donated $1 million in September to the Complex.
