Heirloom Urn
Ethan Kroetsch, EK Wood Designs
Materials Used:
I crafted this urn using a variety of woods to reflect Grandpa's love for travel and the many diverse places he visited. The exterior is made from Anigre, with its warm, golden tones, sourced from West Africa, and Wenge, a dark brown wood native to Central Africa, framing the border. For the interior, I chose figured Sapele, which originates from the rainforests of West Africa, including regions like the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, and Tanzania. For the marquetry design I incorporated Maple, Walnut, and Cherry. Woods native to North America and symbolic of the trees found in Grandpa's own backyard.
Hepplewhite influenced card table
Thomas Blevins, The Vermont Woodworking School
Materials Used:
The main wood I used was ribbon stripe sapele, for its stability and exciting interlocking grain pattern. The stringing inlay was done with American holly, the front fan inlay was done with the same, except with sand shaded edges.

Pipkin Desk
Avery Pipkin, Orange County Schools
Materials Used:
I sourced all of the material for this project from a local sawmill which is owned by the woodworking teacher that I replaced. I used the center cut of the walnut tree for the bookmatched slabs on the top of my desk. The material for the trestle leg was from a mantle that I built for another teacher as a retirement gift. I sourced the Birdseye maple for the inlays from the past instructor who used it for the inlays on his Nakashima desk. The walnut material for the free standing pedestal was lumber that came from the past woodworking teacher as well.

Each year, Woodworking Network's #YoungWoodPro competition recognizes outstanding projects and the young wood pros who create them. Entrants must be between the ages of 18-35, (by year’s end 2025) and be a professional woodworker or student. This year we were able to narrow the submissions down to 21 finalists and one winner will be chosen by our panel of judges based on the overall look/presentation of the project, and complexity of construction and design.
On the subject of this year's finalists, Woodworking Network's Editorial Director Will Sampson remarked, "Not only was there a huge increase in the number of entries this year, but also the quality was simply stunning. As judges, we really had our work cut out for us!"
The 2025 #YoungWoodPro contest winner will receive a $500 monetary award from Woodworking Network and will be featured on WoodworkingNetwork.com and in an upcoming issue of FDMC magazine.
In addition, Grizzly Industrial is generously offering the winner a $2,000 shopping spree, redeemable for any of the tools & machinery or other products sold through their online store at Grizzly.com.
This year’s winning project will be announced at the co-located Closets Conference / Wood Pro Expo June 11-13 in West Palm Beach, FL, and in all of our other channels. #YoungWoodPro is produced by Woodworking Network and sponsored by Grizzly Industrial.
David Biggs has directed Woodworking Network’s digital portfolio over the last 8 years, helping to design and launch multiple new products during that time, as well as providing industry education at major trade shows and association events. David was recently awarded a MediaGrowth Valued Performer Award for outstanding contributions to the B2B Publishing Industry.
