43,192 Attend IWF 2006

ATLANTA -- A total of 43,192 buyers and attendees participated at the International Woodworking Machinery & Furniture Supply Fair held Aug. 23-26 at the Georgia World Congress Center. That represents a 3% increase over IWF 2004, according to show management.

USGBC Partners with Clinton Climate Initiative

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Green Building Council has signed a memorandum of understanding with the newly created Clinton Climate Initiative to engage the largest cities in the world through the Large Cities Climate Leadership Group. The goal is to reduce carbon emissions by embracing energy efficiency and green building strategies.

Prison Bill Opens Doors for Furniture Business

WASHINGTON -- Congress passed a bill Thursday, Sept. 14, which establishes strict limits on Federal Prison Industries Inc., a wholly-owned government corporation that was set up to provide paid employment to inmates, primarily in the manufacture of products for use by the federal government. The bill will infuse more competition in government purchasing, opening the doors for private manufacturers to sell to government agencies, as well as block recent efforts by FPI to sell its services to the private sector. The bill now goes before the Senate for voting.

AWFS Launches Wood Industry Education Web Site

COMMERCE, CA -- WoodIndustryEd.org, a new Web site created by the Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers, is a guide to education and training information for the wood products industry. It features a searchable database of U.S. and Canadian wood technology courses available through high school and post secondary institutions, technical centers, industry-education partnerships and more.

Roseburg Buys Six G-P Particleboard Mills

ATLANTA -- Georgia-Pacific Corp. has reached an agreement to sell its six industrial particleboard mills to Roseburg Forest Products Co. of Roseburg, OR. The mills are located in Taylorsville, Louisville, Eupora and Oxford, MS; Russellville, SC; and Vienna, GA.
