AWI launches new education initiative

The Architectural Woodwork Institute has launched a new initiative to address the woodworking industry’s skills gap, particularly in the area of architectural woodwork.

The association has launched AWI Industry Solutions (AWI IS), a credentialed learning platform that enables woodworking companies to efficiently train employees, significantly reducing the burden of internal training programs.

The program is designed for workers at all levels, with courses ranging from basic woodworking principles to CNC and advanced techniques, and design software training. Principles of Woodworking is the first package available and includes 61 videos, interactive quizzes, a final exam, and industry credentialing. The online courses are available in English and Spanish and are taught by industry experts and educators. The association plans to have more packages available soon, including one on cabinetry. Businesses also can customize courses to meet their specific training needs.

AWI said it hopes the program will help companies boost current employees’ skills and help attract talent from schools and other industries into woodworking. More information is available at awinet.org/education/is.

The association’s commitment to education does not stop there. Offerings also include in-person boot camps, education outreach seminars, academic grants and scholarships. More information can be found at awinet.org/education.

Founded in 1953, AWI represents nearly 2,000 members consisting of architectural woodworkers, suppliers, design professionals and students from around the world. The association is also an ANSI-accredited Standards Developer Organization.
