Would this work to fix a cracked couch frame?

the plan illustrated, glue will get put in the cracks before attaching plates

I have a damaged couch.

Flat board is plywood, you can see that the plywood and the spring strut have cracked, and the nails attaching the strut to the plywood have failed.

I plan to:

1 Cut and pull out all staples in the way.

2 Clamp the strut to the plywood.

3 Use wood screws to screw the strut to the plywood

4 Squeeze epoxy (or wood glue if that would work) into the split wood and plyboard

5 Attach mending plates to bridge the splits

I'll try to squeeze as much epoxy or wood glue into the cracks before attaching the plates. Is there some kind of clamp that I should use to push the cracked part together? Maybe I can put one screw on each side of the crack and use clamps on the screws?

What do you think?
