Bill Gates-backed startup uses old wood to remove carbon from air

Graphyte, a startup backed by Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures fund, offers a new carbon dioxide removal approach that is permanent, affordable, and immediately scalable. The “Carbon Casting” technology can permanently remove billions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) for 1,000+ years at under $100/ton, according to the company.

75% of exclusive hardwood may be illegally harvested

The tropical wood type ipê is popular for building exclusive wooden decks, and in North America and Europe, the demand for the material has increased sharply. Now, a study from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, shows that more than three-quarters of all ipê from the top-producing region in Brazil could have been harvested illegally. "The study reveals where in the chain the greatest risks lie. It can be a tool to counteract illegal logging," said Caroline S.S. Franca, PhD student at Chalmers.

$50 million earmarked to strengthen forest products economy

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service is making nearly $50 million in grant funding available for proposals that "support crucial links between resilient, healthy forests, strong rural economies and jobs in the forestry sector." This funding, the department said, will spark innovation, create new markets for wood products and renewable wood energy, expand processing capacity, and help tackle the climate crisis.
