1. Joinery by Zepsa, Merritt in 'super yacht'  
CHARLOTTE, NC/MENTOR, OH -- Zepsa Industries Inc. of Charlotte, NC, and Merritt Woodwork of Mentor, OH, have provided the interior wood joinery for M/Y Cakewalk, a 281-foot yacht built by Derecktor Shipyards of Bridgeport, CT. Weighing 2,950 tons, Cakewalk is reportedly the largest yacht built in the United States since the 1930s, and possibly the biggest ever built here when measured by volume, according to Derecktor Shipyards. Calling it “transformed to its core” Accsys says Accoya uses an acetylation conversion process that allows woodworkers to machine, coat and glue it like “normal” wood, with a durability and dimensional stability that matches or exceeds even that of tropical hardwoods. Read more.


3. Turning Wood Waste into Dollars
Décor Moulding and Paneling, part of Décor Group, Mississauga, ON, says it has found a way to turn more profit on its sawdust and other wood waste, adding machinery for converting it to briquettes that can be sold at higher prices in consumer markets. Read more.

4. Woodworker to stars found drowned
Birger Juell, who sold his high-end hand-finished wood furnishings from a Chicago Merchandise Mart showroom, was found, along with his wife Anne Juell, drowned in a Wisconsin lake. Read more.


 5. Efficient Edgebanding Practices at Haworth
Among the processes Haworth Inc. of Holland, MI, looked at in its efforts to reduce material usage while maximizing production efficiency, was the edgebanding line. A recent review of the company’s adhesive usage led Ed Velthouse, manufacturing engineer for Haworth, to determine that polyurethane (PUR) adhesive would be ideal for an edgebanding application. 6. Sawmill fire expected to burn for days
FRENCH LICK, IN -- A fire at Pendley Wood Products' sawmill that started at about 2:30 a.m. Oct. 6 continued to smolder.The sawdust and wood waste that caught fire were accumulated in a pile approximately 75 feet high, 50 feet deep and 150 to 200 feet wide. Read more.
