RED LION, PA - Yorktowne Cabinetry will close up shop at its Red Lion, PA plant, relocating that plant's wood cabinet manufacturing to the Ringgold, VA Yorktowne operation of privately-held Elkay Manufacturing.

Yorktowne is a fully integrated manufacturer, beginning with green lumber and processing it through to the finished product, with the process starting at the dimension mill in Mifflinburg, PA where lumber is kilned and milled before transport to the Red Lion plant or Ringgold (near Danville, VA) which handle fine milling, assembly and finish operations.

Elkay Wood Products Co. filed a formal notice with the Commonwealth of  Pennsylvania of its intention to close Yorktowne Cabinetry in Red Lion, PA , laying off 113 employees effective May 15, 2011. 

The two-story Red Lion plant couldn't be upgraded to match the productivity of the $19 million cabinet factory  in Ringgold, developed jointly in 2005 by Pittsylvania County and the City of Danville. That project saw Virginia competing against North Carolina for the projected 540 jobs.

Founded in 1908 as Colonial Cabinets, Yorktowne Cabinetry was acquired by Wickes Corp. in 1973, then by plumbing fixture manufacturer Elkay Corp. In 1993, Elkay created a Cabinetry Division by acquiring Yorktowne, Inc. and Medallion Kitchens. In 1996, Elkay acquired MasterCraft Cabinets. Elkay says the 1998 purchase of Westwood Custom Cabinetry made Elkay the fourth largest cabinet supplier in the U.S.
